Drill Press Safe Operating Procedure

This Drill Press Safe Operating Procedure (SOP) provides a way for your business to outline step-by-step safe processes when operating a drill press.

Drill Press SOP:

• Provides instructions on the use of the equipment both prior to and during operation.
• Ensures workers recognise and manage associated hazards and risks involved.
• Provides a training document for workers. 

Procedure:

1. Follow the pre-operational checklist in the manufacturer’s operational manual, ensure:
2. Operate in accordance with manufacturers’ instructions
3. Wear prescribed PPE - DO NOT wear gloves
4. Select drill speed
5. Adjust V belt
6. Insert drill bit into the chuck and tighten with the chuck key
7. Commence drilling
8. Maintain a pressure until the drill is about to break through the other side of material
9. Shavings should be kept to a minimum length by regularly clearing the drill bit
10. When drilling metal be aware of hot swarf
11. Feed the bit smoothly into the work.
