A 49-year-old worker has died after an aluminium irrigation pole he was handling contacted an overhead power line at an orchard in northern Victoria. WorkSafe has launched an investigation into the fatality.

According to the regulator, the man was installing irrigation last Thursday and was dealing with a 6.5-metre length of aluminium pole when electricity from the powerline above flowed through it, causing electrocution.

Why an energised span is a deadly risk

Aluminium, steel and damp timber all conduct current, so a long tool lifted near an energised span becomes a direct path to earth. Employers must identify hazards, eliminate the risk where reasonably practicable and, when elimination is not achievable, reduce exposure so far as is reasonably practicable. That obligation covers labour hire staff, contractors and self-employed people working on a property.
