Worker dies at central Queensland coal mine

A 58-year-old man has died after sustaining serious head injuries while working at a coal mine in Central Queensland.

Police were called to the incident southwest of Mackay about 10pm on Friday.

Operations at the underground coal mine have ceased following the incident.

Investigations into the cause of the incident are ongoing.

Queensland's Resources Minister Scott Stewart said he was "deeply saddened" by the tragic incident.

"I would like to express my sincere condolences to the man's family, friends and colleagues. My thoughts are with them," he said in a statement.

"Any death or serious injury on a Queensland mine site is unacceptable, and every worker should expect to come home to their families after every shift"
