Safety Blitz Targets Unsafe Construction Sites in the Illawarra Region

SafeWork NSW inspectors are visiting construction sites across the Illawarra region to check builders are meeting workplace health and safety obligations. Wollongong construction sites feature prominently on the inspection schedule, alongside broader Illawarra construction sites where compliance history has raised concern.

During the three-day safety blitz, inspectors will focus on electrical safety, falls from heights, moving plant, structural safety, and dust diseases.

What Inspectors Are Checking

Building sites throughout the region will be assessed against several key risk areas:

• Electrical safety systems and equipment, reviewed against an electrical safety audit checklist for construction sites
• Fall prevention measures for workers operating at height
• Moving plant hazards and traffic management
• Structural integrity of scaffolding and temporary works
• Dust disease risks, including silica exposure controls

SafeWork NSW Regional Director Construction Services Laurence Richey said, "Serious injury or death are never an acceptable part of the job and SafeWork is committed to ensuring builders are doing everything in their power to make sure neither of those occur on their worksite."

Previous Blitz Uncovered Serious Breaches

A similar blitz conducted in the region earlier this year unearthed a number of safety breaches, including lack of fall protection and silica dry cutting. Findings like these echo concerns raised when the CFMEU exposes "dreadful" safety standards on sites elsewhere, reinforcing why sustained regulatory attention matters across Australia's construction sector.
