NT tradies reminded to 'think twice' about asbestos

National Asbestos Awareness Week runs from 22-28 November 2022 and Northern Territory tradies are reminded to 'think twice' before commencing work in buildings constructed before 1990.

NT WorkSafe issued the reminder after contractors recently found asbestos in unexpected locations in Darwin. The safety watchdog issued a safety alert following the incident. The purpose of the alert was to remind workplaces about the importance of asbestos testing prior to work commencing.

NT WorkSafe's Manager, Work Health and Safety Assurance Mr Rob Fereday, said asbestos does not pose a health risk if it is not disturbed.

"Asbestos causes cancer, so it's not recommended that you handle, remove, or dispose of asbestos yourself."

"Work with a licensed asbestos removalist as they have the training and equipment needed for the safe removal and disposal of asbestos," Mr. Fereday said.
