Miner Dies in Underground Accident

Death of WA contractor in a workplace accident. 

Work has been suspended at the Silver Lake Resources' Daisy Milano gold mine after a man died while working underground yesterday morning.

The accident happened in Western Australia’s Goldfields region, 50km south-east of Kalgoorlie and is being investigated by WorkSafe. A separate investigation into the circumstances of the contractors passing is being undertaken by the WA Department of Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety and will be carried out alongside WorkSafe’s investigation.

A statement has been issued by the company to advise that ‘Underground operations at the Daisy Complex mine have been temporarily suspended in accordance with normal statutory requirements.’

Thousands without power and mammoth cleanup underway in Victoria. 

More than 100,000 homes are without power and 1410 incidents remain active after wild storms left a trail of destruction across Victoria over the past 48 hours.

Amid freezing conditions, approximately 290,000 homes lost power with some residents told it wouldn't be restored until Sunday, meaning they won’t be able to heat their homes for several days.

It was the busiest day in State Emergency Service (SES) history, receiving about 7340 calls with damage to properties, flash flooding, trees ripped from the ground, blocking roads and smashing through houses. In the worst hit areas of Emerald, Lilydale and the Dandenongs power lines and trees were down every few metres.

The streets of Traralgon Creek in the Gippsland regions turned into canals yesterday as floodwaters rose and up to 200 homes had to be evacuated. Across the state, there are 15 flood warnings in place.

Residents in Trentham have been advised not to drink tap water until further notice. Bottled water is available at the town's Emergency Relief Centre.

A man in his 60s was found dead in a car submerged in floodwaters in the town of Woodside yesterday afternoon.  An investigation is underway.
