WorkSafe NZ issues quad bike drive belts safety warning
WorkSafe NZ reminds quad bike riders to check and service quad bike drive belts regularly after a farm manager was fatally injured in a quad bike rollover.
Early investigations revealed the drive belt on the quad bike had broken.
“Ordinarily when the drive belt breaks, the quad bike’s wheels would keep rolling whether or not they were in gear,” WorkSafe NZ said in a safety alert.
WorkSafe states that the faulty drive belt prevented freewheeling after ‘becoming bound up in the gear pulley,’ causing all the wheels to lock up.
