VIC company fined after a worker's arm became trapped in a shredder

A Victorian scrap metal recycler received a $40,000 fine due to an incident involving a contractor whose arm became trapped in a machine lacking proper guarding.

The company received its sentencing in the Sunshine Magistrates' Court after admitting guilt to two counts of failing to provide a safe work environment.

The company received a fine without a conviction and was further instructed to cover expenses totaling $4,132.

WorkSafe Executive Director Health and Safety Narelle Beer said it is the responsibility of individuals who have control or management over a workplace to guarantee its safe operation.
