Territorians urged to ‘Think Twice about Asbestos’ this week

This week is National Asbestos Awareness Week (20-26 November 2023) and NT WorkSafe is reminding all Territorians to Think Twice about Asbestos.

Asbestos was banned in Australia two decades ago but it’s still present in many buildings constructed before 1990.

NT WorkSafe’s Manager WHS Assurance, Rob Fereday urges Territorians to exercise caution when working on all pre-1990 buildings.

“In the 20 years since the national ban, we have a new generation of tradies working in the industry that may not fully appreciate the risks of asbestos exposure.”

“As asbestos-related diseases take time to develop and there is no immediate injury from exposure, there is also a danger of complacency from more experienced workers,” Mr Fereday said.
