Serious quad bike crash in northern Queensland prompts safety warning

Queensland police have issued a safety reminder to quad bike riders after a man was seriously injured in a quad bike crash in north Queensland on April 26.

Police said four men were riding on a quad bike at Rocky Point when one of them fell from the vehicle.  He was rushed to Weipa Hospital with serious head injuries.  The 18-year-old man was later airlifted to Townsville University Hospital for further treatment.

Queensland police have issued a safety reminder following the incident.

“Quad bikes are designed for specific purposes and within particular operating conditions. Using them outside these parameters can significantly increase the risk of severe injury or death,” Queensland police said.

“Overloading, inappropriate attachments or towing can significantly change the handling, stability and braking of a quad bike and may contribute to a potential roll over.”

Three people have been killed in quad bike incidents this year, according to Safe Work Australia.
