Man’s death on Queensland rural property sparks quad bike safety warning

Workplace Health and Safety Queensland has warned of the dangers of using quad bikes after a rural property owner was fatally injured in a quad bike rollover in November 2021.

Initial investigations indicated that the man rolled his quad bike while mustering cattle in a slopey area. The quad bike had been fitted with an Operator Protection Device (OPD) by the manufacturer, but it had been removed.

WorkSafe is investigating the incident.

Workplace Health and Safety Queensland said quad bikes may roll over and cause serious injury or death, particularly if used on rough terrain. Heavy or uneven loads can significantly change the stability and braking of a quad bike and may contribute to a potential rollover.

Workplace Health and Safety Queensland reminds duty holders to ensure quad bike operators are well trained. They should also ensure quad bike operators always wear appropriate protective gear. The vehicles should be well maintained and serviced.
