Multiple line-of-fire incidents bring to light the serious hazards present in mobile plant pulling tasks in NSW mines

OHS Daily News

The NSW Resources Regulator has warned mines following a surge in incidents related to mobile plant pulling operations.

In two separate instances, workers were fortunate to avoid injury when metal objects were propelled at high velocities due to the failure of ropes or slings. The investigations disclosed that there were shortcomings in the documentation of work, a failure to adequately identify hazards, and non-compliance with proper procedural protocols.

"Mine operators are being urged to improve risk management by ensuring clear, updated procedures and an improvement in completing job safety analyses (JSAs) for all pulling activities," the safety warning from the regulator indicates.

The regulator emphasises the importance for workers and supervisors to comply with stringent protocols, employ the correct equipment, and report any issues that arise when tasks do not align with the intended plan.
