SafeWork SA campaign looks at violence and aggression in the retail sector

SafeWork SA plans to conduct a state-wide compliance campaign early next month to look at the issue of violence and aggression in the retail sector.

Inspectors will visit retail outlets both in metropolitan and regional areas to ensure businesses are managing the risk of violence and aggression at the workplace.

SafeWork SA says a good number of workers in the retail sector are young and may not know what to do during a violent or aggressive incident.

Work-related violence and aggression are common in the retail sector and includes any incident in which a worker is verbally abused, threatened or physically assaulted in circumstances relating to their work,” Safe Work SA said in a statement.

“SafeWork SA wants to ensure a safe work environment free from hazards for these workers.”

The safety regulator said inspectors will educate PCBUs on their work health and safety obligations and how to appropriately manage work-related violence and aggression.
