SafeWork NSW urges workplaces to prioritise the health of tradies this August
August is recognised as Tradie Health Month and NSW’s workplace safety watchdog states that it’s an ideal opportunity for tradies to reflect on and discuss any work health and safety (WHS) issues to maintain a long and healthy professional life.
Between 2017 and 2021, about 20 percent of reports received by SafeWork NSW were due to injuries suffered by young workers.
SafeWork recommends that construction companies establish safe environments for workers, provide proper training and supervision for young tradies, and encourage them to voice any concerns.
Head of SafeWork NSW Trent Curtin said work-related incidents have the potential to result in life-altering injuries, illnesses, and fatalities.
“If you employ young workers or work experience students, make sure you understand your obligations to protect them and support their health and safety at work. They are vulnerable. They often lack experience, are still developing physically and mentally, are eager to make a good impression and can be reluctant to ask questions,” he said.
