Near miss incident underscores the risks posed by unsecured lifting jibs

The potential hazards associated with the use of unsecured lifting jibs on forklifts have been brought to attention following a recent near miss incident in South Australia.

According to SafeWork SA, a worker had a narrow escape from being struck by a load of steel when the improperly attached lifting jib slipped off the tynes of a forklift and landed on nearby machinery, resulting in damage.

An investigation conducted by the safety watchdog revealed several concerns, such as the absence of the safety jib's securing chain, inadequate training and ineffective communication among the workers.

SafeWork SA urges businesses to check lifting jibs for any signs of damage prior to use and make sure they are properly attached to the forklift according to the manufacturer's guidelines.
