Deaths and injuries from ‘run away’ farm equipment prompt safety warning

SafeWork SA issued a warning after three incidents where farm workers were seriously injured or killed by out-of-control farm equipment in the last month.

A farm worker is in serious condition following a collision with a harvesting sweeper on 4 March.

In February, two other incidents took place, resulting in serious injuries and the death of a farmer who was crushed by a tractor on 2 February.

Four days after that, an individual was crushed by an out-of-control tractor on a Riverland property.

SafeWork SA says incidents involving runaway farm equipment are mainly attributed to the lack of safety measures being implemented, such as handbrakes or wheel chocks, which are crucial in ensuring the machinery remains stationary.
