SafeWork SA has commenced a year-long compliance initiative focused on the road transport sector after conducting a three-day truck stop operation.

SafeWork SA carried out 129 truck audits as part of the operation near Port Augusta, discovering that over two-thirds of the vehicles exhibited safety issues.

“A team of SafeWork SA inspectors issued 166 statutory notices for non-compliance issues including poor condition of load restraints, inadequate personal protective equipment (PPE) for dangerous goods carried, no fire extinguishers, drivers not being adequately trained to carry dangerous goods and lack of roadside safety warning triangles,” the workplace safety regulator said

SafeWork SA said inspectors will check in with the affected truckies in the weeks ahead to confirm that they have complied with the notices.

The safety regulator indicated that it will additionally focus on road transport businesses that have previously experienced a high volume of workers' compensation claims.
