WorkSafe reminds tradies their most valuable asset is not found in the toolbox
WorkSafe Victoria is advising tradespeople to consider their body as their most essential tool and to take measures to protect it from pain, strain, and injury throughout this Tradies National Health Month.
The occupational health and safety agency states that Musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) are still the most prevalent injuries among employees in Victoria's construction industry, typically arising from unsafe manual handling practices including lifting, carrying, and repetitive actions.
WorkSafe statistics reveal Musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) continue to be the predominant type of injury affecting workers in Victoria's construction sector, frequently resulting from dangerous manual handling activities such as lifting, carrying, and repetitive motions.
WorkSafe's Chief Health and Safety Officer, Sam Jenkin, highlighted the responsibility of employers to remove or lessen risks linked to hazardous manual handling.
“Tools can be replaced. Bodies can’t,” Mr Jenkin said. “Musculoskeletal disorders don’t just mean a few days off work – they can lead to chronic pain, long recoveries, reduced quality of life and mental health challenges – which can all be career-ending,” he said.
“As an employer, it’s your job to protect workers from these devastating consequences.”
