WorkSafe NZ issues warning regarding safety net systems

WorkSafe NZ has released a safety alert emphasising the significant health and safety hazards faced by workers when utilising safety net systems that have not undergone testing by an accredited organisation to meet recognised standards.

Safety net systems are implemented in both residential and commercial construction to mitigate the risk of injury if a worker falls from an elevated position.

The Health and Safety at Work Act imposes a responsibility on importers and suppliers of safety net systems to verify that the nets they import and provide have undergone testing to confirm their performance.

WorkSafe observes that the testing and accompanying documentation from international testing organisations can often be challenging to authenticate and, in certain cases, may be deceptive.
