WorkSafe issues warning about dangers of amusement rides

Recent community events featuring unsafe amusement setups have led WorkSafe Victoria to issue a safety warning to organisers who are hiring rides for year-end festivities.

At community gatherings such as school fairs, sports events, and other festivities, inflatable jumping castles and slides tend to be quite popular, according to WorkSafe. Nevertheless, improper setup, operation, and supervision of these attractions can lead to serious safety concerns.

WorkSafe Executive Director Health and Safety Sam Jenkin said inspectors discovered dangerous setups at two schools in Melbourne last month, such as an unsecured jumping castle, exposed electrical equipment, and an inflatable ride placed near power lines.

"Well-meaning parents and volunteers organising events on a tight budget may be tempted to choose a cheaper, less professional amusement hire option, but backyard operators just aren’t worth the risk," Mr Jenkin said.

"No one wants celebration to turn to tragedy, that’s why it’s crucial that event organisers ask questions about safety equipment, systems and processes – and if you’re not satisfied with the answers, go elsewhere."
