WorkSafe Victoria has issued a reminder to both employers and employees regarding the significant hazards linked to the transportation of dangerous goods in tool of trade (TOT) vehicles.

Victoria’s workplace safety regulator said a serious injury was sustained by an employee due to an explosion involving a TOT vehicle. It is believed that the employee was handling flammable gas cylinders, which could have contributed to the incident.

WorkSafe indicated that tradespeople have either lost their lives or sustained severe injuries due to explosions of their work vehicles while transporting hazardous materials.

The safety watchdog emphasises the importance for individuals transporting dangerous goods as a Transport Operator (TOT) to adhere to the transport limits established for TOT vehicles, as outlined in the Dangerous Goods (Transport by Road or Rail) Regulations 2018.

“If transported dangerous goods do not meet the criteria or quantity requirements to be transported in a TOT vehicle, then you must comply with the commercial transportation requirements under these Regulations,” WorkSafe Victoria states.
