Warning for SA construction sector as Christmas rush approaches

OHS Daily News

SafeWork SA is calling on builders and contractors to place a higher emphasis on safety rather than succumbing to the pressures of heavy workloads as they strive to finalise projects before the Christmas shutdown.

The alert comes in response to 19 incidents within the construction sector that were reported by SafeWork SA from 1 October to 14 November. In addition, SafeWork SA has recorded 64 complaints related to the construction industry, mostly from the general public.

In the span of six weeks, there were 182 statutory notices issued, comprising 54 prohibition notices and 128 improvement notices, according to SafeWork.

SafeWork SA Executive Director Glenn Farrell said that, similar to various sectors, construction workers eagerly anticipate a well-deserved break during the Christmas season.

“We are urging construction businesses to remain vigilant when it comes to safety in the busy weeks ahead so we can all enjoy the break with our family and friends,” Farrell said.
