Victorian education department and pool operator fined $180k for boy's drowning
The Victorian Department of Education and a pool operator were collectively fined $180,000 following the death of a young boy on a school trip.
The eight-year-old boy tragically died by drowning at a Port Fairy school camp on 21 May 2021.
Following their guilty pleas, both the department and the operator received their sentences in the Warrnambool County Court. The charge they faced was failing to protect people who were not employees from health and safety risks.
Both the pool operator and the department were convicted, with the former receiving an $80,000 fine and the latter facing a $100,000 fine.
