A worker has been transported to the hospital by helicopter after being pierced by a metal rod in south-eastern Victoria.

Reports suggest the man in his fifties was pierced by a 60cm metal rod, which penetrated both his chest and back.

The incident occurred at a quarry in Lang Lang around 10am on Monday, resulting in significant injuries to his upper body.

He received treatment at the scene before being flown to the Royal Melbourne Hospital, where he remains in a serious, though stable, condition.

WorkSafe is looking into the workplace incident.
