VIC companies facing charges for breaching workplace safety regulations

OHS Daily News

WorkSafe has filed charges against two companies related to the failure of a major portion of the structural steel framework during the redevelopment of a recreational centre in Melbourne two years ago.

Each of the two companies is accused of violating section 26(1) of the Occupational Health and Safety Act for not ensuring, to the extent that is reasonably practicable, that a workplace under their management or control was safe and posed no risks to health.

WorkSafe alleges “that it was reasonably practicable to have a competent person check the quality assurance documents provided for an imported steel truss to ensure that it had been welded in accordance with the design drawings and fabrication requirements.”

The cases are scheduled for a filing hearing at the Melbourne Magistrates' Court on 11 November 2024.
