Two miners sustain severe burns from steam at Queensland copper smelter

Two workers were transported to hospital in a serious condition after sustaining severe burns at a mine site in outback Queensland.

The miners were at a Mount Isa copper smelter when a steam vent next to their work area suddenly released.

The first man, aged 26, experienced burns on 60 percent of his body from the neck downwards, while the second worker sustained burns on half of his face and neck.

Both workers were flown to the Royal Brisbane Hospital on Thursday night.

Resources Safety and Health Queensland (RSHQ) is investigating the incident.
