What is a Safe Work Method Statement?

A Safe Work Method Statement (SWMS) is a legal document that outlines the safe working procedures for high-risk construction work tasks and identifies:

  • The hazards associated with the work being carried out; and
  • The controls that can be put in place to mitigate those hazards; and
  • The responsibilities of those involved in carrying out the work.

This is an excellent format for any health and safety document, and there is nothing to stop anyone from using this format outside of the defined high-risk construction work categories.

In fact, we have created many SWMS for customers outside of the construction environment because of the clarity of use a SWMS format provides.

Top five most unusual SWMS

Here is a list of the top five most unusual SWMS we have developed for our customers that are also available to the public:

1. Grave Digging SWMS

Excavation work is dangerous, and grave-digging is no exception. Every year, people are seriously injured or killed while digging graves. There are many hazards associated with this type of work, including heavy machinery, excavation collapse, and exposure to the elements. In addition, graves are often located in remote areas, making it difficult to get help if an accident occurs.

2. Crime Scene Clean up SWMS

Crime scene cleaners are often called upon to deal with some of the most gruesome and dangerous environments imaginable. Biological hazards like blood, bodily fluids, and tissue can pose serious health risks if not handled properly. In addition, crime scenes often contain hazardous materials like drugs, chemicals, and weapons that can be extremely dangerous.

3. Meth Lab Clean up SWMS

Many people are not aware of the dangers of cleaning up meth labs. Meth labs are toxic environments full of chemicals that can be harmful to your health. Meth labs can also be very flammable and is a job best left to the professionals.

4. Pest Control SWMS

Pest control is essential for keeping our homes and businesses free of rodents and other pests. However, pests can carry diseases transmitted to humans through bites, and some bites can also be poisonous. In addition, some pesticides used in pest control can be harmful to humans and working in confined spaces can pose risks if proper safety precautions are not taken.

5. Prescribed Burns SWMS

While prescribed burns can effectively manage fire risk, they can also be dangerous if not properly executed. If the fire is not kept under control, it can spread quickly and lead to property damage and injuries. Smoke inhalation is also a serious risk, as the smoke from a prescribed burn can contain harmful toxins.

Is a SWMS the right document for you?

When it comes to health and safety, there is no one-size-fits-all solution. However, a SWMS can be an effective way to manage safety no matter what task you are undertaking.

So if you are looking for a way to improve safety in your workplace, check out our selection of SWMS. You never know, even if it's not a regular job we might already have what you need!
