SafeWork says National Agriculture Day is an opportune moment to evaluate and emphasise the significance of safety measures on farms

OHS Daily News

SafeWork NSW is calling on farmers to prioritise the safety of their work environments and to actively implement measures to reduce psychosocial risks in the workplace in observance of National Agriculture Day.

According to SafeWork NSW, agricultural workers and farmers are still experiencing significantly higher rates of serious injuries and fatalities compared to other sectors, with the farming industry representing one out of every five worker deaths statewide.

The safety regulator adds that a significant number of farm-related deaths are linked to the use of tractors, quad bikes, side-by-side vehicles, and other machinery. Moreover, augers and harvesting equipment are notable contributors to injuries and harm within the agricultural sector.

Head of SafeWork NSW Trent Curtin said “This National Agricultural Day we want all farmers and those working in the agricultural industry to check in on their physical and mental wellbeing.”
