SafeWork SA is cautioning homeowners planning to undertake DIY renovations during the upcoming Easter long weekend to remain vigilant about the serious risks of asbestos, which continues to be found in numerous homes across South Australia.

SafeWork points out that asbestos materials can be readily disturbed during home improvement activities. Even a seemingly minor task, such as making a hole in the wall to mount a picture, could lead to the release of asbestos-containing materials.

“All home renovators and DIY enthusiasts should be asbestos aware before starting any work around the house. However, it is recommended that asbestos removal should be left to a professional,” SafeWork SA said.

“Although asbestos is no longer used, notifications alerting SafeWork SA to asbestos removals across South Australia each year are increasing.”

In Australia, it is estimated that diseases associated with asbestos lead to roughly 4,000 deaths annually.
