SA salt harvesting company fined after young worker seriously injured

A salt harvesting company has been fined $75,000 in the South Australian Employment Tribunal (SAET) after a worker suffered serious injuries when her right arm was caught between a roller and a conveyor belt in April 2020.

The company pleaded guilty and was sentenced for health and safety failings and exposing workers to an unsafe work environment.

SafeWork SA found that the conveyor did not have guarding and an emergency stop control device at the time of the incident.

Executive Director of SafeWork SA, Martyn Campbell said, “In this case, the incident that occurred and the injuries that were sustained could have been prevented”.

The company has since installed guards and an emergency stop control device to the conveyor.
