The Victorian Government says it is committed to the protection of roadside workers and emergency services, emphasising their role in aiding Victorians during times of significant need.

On Wednesday, Minister for Roads and Road Safety Melissa Horne revealed that Road Rule 79A will be extended, enabling workers and volunteers to execute their tasks without the anxiety of safety risks, whether they are dealing with an accident, a breakdown, or a situation that poses a threat to life.

In 2017, Road Rule 79A was established, requiring that drivers and riders slow down to 40 km/h when they encounter stationary emergency or enforcement vehicles with flashing lights in red, blue, magenta, or yellow.

As of July 1, Road Rule 79A (RR79A) will be revised to include accident towing, breakdown towing, roadside assistance, and all service vehicles responding to incidents.

The color of the blinking lights specified in the road regulation will remain the same.
