Queensland mining sector to derive lessons from newly released animation and CCTV recordings of crane incident

A mining firm has recently released a video, supported by Resources Safety and Health Queensland (RSHQ), to raise awareness in the industry about a common and risky problem.
The video illustrates a 40-tonne contractor crane rollover that occurred at a central Queensland mine in December 2024.
The pick and carry crane was in operation at more than 250% of its specified capacity when it tipped over, just missing workers in close proximity.
RSHQ’s Chief Inspector of Coal Mines Jacques le Roux said crane rollovers have been a significant area of concern for the regulator in the past two years.
“We’ve been increasing awareness around crane-related issues for some time now through our own animation last year, Safety Alerts, forums and even involving the Crane Industry Council of Australia in our work,” said Mr le Roux.
