Queensland aquatic centre fined $85,000 over electric shock incident

A fine of $85,000 has been imposed on a Queensland aquatic centre after an employee suffered an electric shock in a workplace incident in February 2022.

The worker was using a pool-cleaning tool at the aquatic centre when the equipment touched powerlines.

The centre admitted it failed to provide a safe work environment, thus exposing a worker to a risk of serious injury or death.

Head of Queensland's Electrical Safety Office, Donna Heelan stressed the importance of adhering to the regulations designed to prevent such incidents.

"Working near powerlines can be fatal. Touching them or straying into the exclusion zone around them can result in a serious electric shock or electrocution," Ms Heelan said.
