Poultry farm faces charges after fatal incident involving conveyor belt in Lethbridge

A poultry farm operator in Lethbridge has been charged by Victoria’s workplace safety watchdog after a worker suffered a fatal injury due to being crushed by a conveyor belt in March 2023.

The man, aged 34, was operating the conveyor belt without its guard in place when he became caught in the rotating parts of the tail pulley.

The company is facing three accusations in accordance with section 26(1) of the Occupational Health and Safety Act for its inability to provide a workplace that is safe and free from health-related dangers.

WorkSafe alleges the company ‘failed to install a fixed guard over an in-running nip point near the tail pulley, or implement a lockout-tag out procedure to prevent the conveyor from operating during maintenance works.’
