NT WorkSafe reminds employers to protect workers from heat-related illnesses

OHS Daily News

NT WorkSafe calls on employers to take necessary measures to ensure that workers exposed to extreme heat can execute their tasks safely and without health risks, following the Bureau of Meteorology's warning regarding an impending heatwave in various parts of the western Top End this week.

According to the workplace safety regulator, it is essential for workplaces to offer information at the commencement of each shift concerning the indicators and symptoms of heat-related illnesses, along with the emergency response measures to be implemented should a heat-related incident arise.

In addition, it is advisable for employers to plan work hours in a manner that avoids the hottest times of the day and to allocate tasks evenly among workers to ensure that no single employee is overwhelmed.

WorkSafe also advises workers to refrain from consuming caffeinated beverages, such as tea and coffee, as these can exacerbate dehydration.
