NSW Resources Regulator urges mine sites to safeguard workers against heat stress
The NSW Resources Regulator calls on employers to implement protective measures for mine workers in order to mitigate the risks associated with extreme heat.
The Regulator warns that extreme heat can result in critical health problems, requiring hospitalisation and possibly leading to death. It is vital to remain cool and well-hydrated before, during, and after instances of hot weather.
“Mine operators are required to manage the risk to health and safety associated with extremes of temperature and /or moisture content of air (humidity),” the regulator states.
To mitigate heat stress, underground mines are obligated to adopt control measures, including the implementation of monitoring, in regions where workers may operate or travel, particularly when the wet-bulb temperature is greater than 27° C.
