NSW Government initiates enforcement protocols to provide greater safeguards for electrical apprentices

Under new regulations intended to protect young workers and ensure compliance with quality standards in electrical work, electricians in New South Wales who neglect to properly supervise their apprentices will have their licenses revoked.

According to the State Government, fatalities associated with electrical incidents continue to be the second most prevalent cause of deaths within the NSW construction sector.

SafeWork NSW received reports of 1,708 incidents occurring in construction industry workplaces from January 2020 through the end of April this year. Furthermore, there were eight recorded fatalities associated with electrical incidents from July 2022 to June 2024.

Minister for Building Anoulack Chanthivong said, “Experienced electricians are on notice -they must properly supervise their apprentices or face the risk of fines, license suspension or cancelation.”
