NSW Government names first SafeWork NSW Commissioner to enhance worker protection
Janet Schorer has been appointed by the NSW Government as the inaugural Commissioner of SafeWork NSW to bolster its commitment to worker protection.
Ms. Schorer has accumulated more than 27 years of experience in prominent public sector agencies, including the Department of Premier and Cabinet and the Department of Family and Community Services, according to a media statement published by the state Government.
“With SafeWork NSW becoming a standalone regulator on July 1, the incoming Commissioner will address policy, compliance, best practices and meaningful engagement with workers, unions, businesses and the Family and Injured Workers Support and Advisory Group (FISWAG) to make for a stronger and more robust organization,” the state Government said.
One of her primary responsibilities will involve concentrating on the prevention and management of silica and other dust-related illnesses linked to tunnelling projects in the state.
Ms. Schorer, who is set to assume her position as Commissioner on Monday, 14 July 2025, was selected after a thorough recruitment process.
