NSW encourages workplaces to maintain safety during this National Asbestos Awareness Week

The NSW Government urges workplaces throughout the state to stay alert to the risks of asbestos exposure during this Asbestos Awareness Week.
Data reveals that more than 4,000 Australians succumb each year to illnesses associated with asbestos exposure.
National Asbestos Awareness Week (from Monday, November 24 to Sunday, November 30) highlights the critical importance of safety in the handling of materials potentially containing asbestos.
During the period of 2024-2025, it was reported that there were approximately 126 cases of asbestosis and 269 cases of mesothelioma in New South Wales. There have been 213 reported fatalities due to asbestosis and mesothelioma.
SafeWork NSW Commissioner Janet Schorer stated that during National Asbestos Awareness Week, the safety watchdog encourages those handling asbestos to remain informed, understand their rights, and rely on professionals.
Minister for Work Health and Safety, Sophie Cotsis, said it is the duty of employers to guarantee that their workers comply with safe procedures while working with asbestos, as this represents the optimal approach to prevent harmful exposure.
