The National Heavy Vehicle Regulator (NHVR) has embarked on a month-long nationwide safety campaign aimed at eliminating unsafe driving habits in the waste and construction sectors.

Paul Salvati, the Chief Operations Officer of NHVR said ‘Operation Sapphire’ will concentrate on significant safety hazards present in the waste and construction sectors, which encompass mechanical issues, mass discrepancies, dimensional inaccuracies, loading problems, and permit violations.

“The transport of waste and construction materials is integral to Australia’s infrastructure and economy; however, it can also be intrinsically hazardous and present challenging safety risks for the driver of the vehicle, and other road users,” Mr Salvati said.

“Whether it’s overloaded skips or unsecured scaffolding, contravention of the Heavy Vehicle National Law (HVNL) can have severe consequences for everyone on the road."

According to Mr. Salvati, loading offences were found to be the second highest risk category during the operation that took place last year.
