NHVR seeks to address safety concerns in Tasmania building and construction industry

The National Heavy Vehicle Regulator (NHVR) has recently commenced a targeted compliance initiative in Tasmania to ensure heavy vehicles are safe for the road and drivers are complying with work and rest regulations.
Named 'Operation Amplify', this initiative will see NHVR Safety and Compliance Officers (SCOs) carry out roadside inspections in busy areas like Hobart, Launceston, and Burnie, after a recent compliance operation revealed safety concerns in the building and construction sector.
NHVR Acting Executive Director On-Road Operations Steve Miller said past operations conducted across the state had uncovered significant levels of non-compliance.
“Almost 30% of heavy vehicles intercepted during similar operations were found to be non-compliant, with mechanical issues identified as the highest area of non-compliance,” he said
“Load restraint was another area of significant concern, particularly unsecured tools and construction materials.
“Any type of unsecured load can impact a heavy vehicle’s stability, steering and brake performance, placing drivers and other road users at serious risk.”
