NHVR reminds truckies to be extra vigilant throughout Rail Safety Week

The National Heavy Vehicle Regulator (NHVR) is reminding all heavy vehicle drivers to be cautious around rail lines during Rail Safety Week (5-11 August).

Rail Safety Week is an annual event in Australia and New Zealand that focuses on educating the community about the importance of practising safety measures while using rail services.

Given the heightened risk of catastrophic consequences in train collisions with heavy vehicles, the NHVR underscores the heavy vehicle industry's pivotal role in mitigating such incidents.

The CEO of NHVR, Sal Petroccitto OAM, said it is important for truckies to stay alert and avoid getting too comfortable, even when driving on familiar roads.

Earlier this year, a report published by the Australian Transport Safety Bureau revealed that there were a total of 49 incidents of heavy vehicles colliding at level crossings between July 2014 and August 2022.
