NHVR advises drivers to prioritise safety while driving during Rural Road Safety Month
September marks Rural Road Safety Month, a campaign organised by the Australian Road Safety Foundation (ARSF). Consequently, the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator (NHVR) has issued a critical reminder for all drivers to increase their attentiveness and comply with safety warnings.
NHVR reports that out of the 92 fatalities in crashes with heavy vehicles between January and July this year, 60 occurred in regional, rural, or remote locations.
The regulator also states that the level of severe injuries from road incidents in rural areas is almost double that of urban areas.
NHVR CEO Sal Petroccitto OAM expressed his concern regarding the alarming number of fatalities occurring on Australian roads annually, particularly those involving heavy vehicles such as trucks and buses.
“Losing a friend, family or loved one in a road accident is always a tragedy, and – particularly in rural and regional communities – can have a devastating and long-lasting impact on local communities,” Mr Petroccitto said.
