New Zealand workers remembered on International Memorial Day

New Zealanders who have died as a result of a work-related injury or illness have been remembered on International Workers’ Memorial Day.

WorkSafe Chief Executive Phil Parkes said, “This year’s theme is a safe and healthy working environment as a fundamental principle and right at work.”

“This means when people go to work or are at a workplace, they know they won’t be at risk or harmed. It’s all about keeping people healthy and safe from long-term illness, injury, or death.”

According to WorkSafe data, in 2002, the workplace fatality rate was 5.4 per 100,000 workers, but in 2022, the rate was 2.2.
