New taskforce to tackle silica hazards in tunnelling projects across NSW
The NSW Government has created a new Expert Taskforce to manage and tackle health hazards linked to silica exposure for workers involved in tunnelling projects.
The Taskforce, which includes representatives from governmental bodies, the medical field, industry, and labor unions, is tasked with providing expert counsel to avert and manage diseases associated with silica and other dust exposure in tunneling projects throughout the state.
The Minister for Work Health and Safety, Sophie Cotsis, said the Minns Labor Government is resolutely focused on tackling the health and safety hazards posed by silica dust to safeguard workers.
“The Taskforce will give the community confidence that we have the right experience and expertise in the same room to guide the response to this risk,” the minister said.
“I welcome the important work of the expert taskforce to protect the health and safety of workers. We have identified areas which will be addressed in a co-ordinated, transparent process which will help create safer workplaces.”
