Safe Work Australia has published a research report from Monash University, which explores the pathways that contribute to secondary psychological injury.

The report analyses the primary factors that lead to an injured worker experiencing a secondary psychological injury.

“A secondary psychological injury refers to new or worsening mental health symptoms that arise during a workers’ compensation claim,” Safe Work Australia said.

The findings of the research suggest that the likelihood of a secondary psychological injury increases when an employee's ability to handle stressors is compromised due to a work-related injury or illness.

According to Safe Work Australia, the research results will guide additional efforts within the National Return to Work Strategy.
