New coal dust workplace exposure standard takes effect in Queensland

The new respirable coal dust workplace exposure standard of 1.5 mg/m3 took effect in Queensland on 1 October 2022.

Consequently, WorkSafe advises businesses that work with coal to review dust control measures to ensure they meet the new requirements. The safety agency also wants workers to wear personal protective equipment to minimise the risk of exposure to silica dust.

“We have established the ‘Managing respirable dust hazards in coal-fired power stations code of practice 2018’ to provide clear, enforceable standards for industry,” WorkSafe said in a statement.

“We are also investing $5m for medical research that improves the health and wellbeing of Queensland workers with occupational dust lung diseases like coal workers’ pneumoconiosis and silicosis.”
