National Asbestos Awareness Week highlights the critical issue of safety

During this National Asbestos Awareness Week (25 November to 1 December), the federal Government has acknowledged the harmful effects of asbestos on Australians.

Despite Australia banning asbestos over 20 years ago, 4,000 Australians still die from asbestos-related diseases each year.

The Minister for Employment and Workplace Relations, Murray Watt, emphasised the importance of exercising caution during renovations of homes constructed prior to 1990, as these properties are likely to contain asbestos.

“We are still feeling the impacts of Australia’s deadly legacy with asbestos, which still remains in our built environment,” Minister Watt said.

“As this material ages, the chances of it releasing harmful fibres increases, particularly when disturbed so anyone undertaking renovation projects should seek advice from professionals.

“The Albanese Government understands the tragic impact asbestos has had on many Australians, including in many cases, tragic loss of life. This week in particular, our thoughts are with those families still grieving.”
