National Agriculture Day recognises workers across farming, fisheries and forestry sectors, marking a moment to reflect on their contributions and the risks they face daily. Agricultural days are celebrated annually in many countries to acknowledge national contributions of those in the agriculture industry. From riding boundary fences on a remote cattle station to harvesting wheat in a combine-harvester, agricultural workers remain the lifeblood of our communities.

In 2021, Australians will celebrate National Agriculture Day on November 19, and SafetyDocs by SafetyCulture would like to acknowledge dangers all agricultural workers face when working the land.

Why Agriculture Safety Matters

Australian agriculture accounts for 55% of Australian land use and encompasses diverse agricultural, fisheries and forestry sectors. With that diversity comes a wide range of workplace hazards, making it one of the most dangerous industries to work in.

Statistics from SafeWork Australia show agriculture holds the highest fatality rate of any Australian industry, at 14.8 fatalities per 100,000 workers. Agricultural vehicles, including tractors and quad bikes, account for 37% of worker fatalities in this sector.

Reviewing site-specific agriculture SOPs and maintaining current agriculture SWMS documentation gives farm operators practical tools for managing these hazards. SafeWork has previously noted that National Agriculture Day presents an opportune moment to evaluate farm safety measures and strengthen protections for those working the land.
