Monbulk nursery sentenced after worker’s fatal fall from roof

A Monbulk-based nursery and horticulture supplier has been imposed a fine of $65,000 after a worker experienced a fatal head injury due to a fall through a shed roof onto a concrete surface.

The Melbourne Magistrates' Court rendered a sentence against the company last week, without a conviction, after it had previously entered a guilty plea to a charge concerning its failure to minimise fall risks through the use of a fall arrest system.

The court also instructed the company to cover $8,000 in expenses.

The incident happened in June 2022 when a man was undertaking the replacement of polycarbonate roofing sheets without the use of any fall protection equipment.

He plunged through one of the sheets, dropping 3.3 meters to the ground below.

The 66-year-old man was hospitalised for brain surgery, but he passed away a few days afterwards.
